'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' Debate: We Dissect the Newest Photo

Fortune favors the bold, we're told, luck the well prepared mind. Well, that or those who manage to get their hands on a little vial of Felix Felicis, of course. (Just a tablespoon will do ya!)

"Harry Potter" fans got lucky themselves a little bit, this morning, with the release of a new image from "Half-Blood Prince," which showcases The Chosen One and the one who does the choosing in the latter's potion classroom.

Jim Broadbent as Professor Horace Slughorn and Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'

But what does the image tell us?

Well, the photo is certainly from very early in the film, the first day of Potions class, in fact, when Harry wins a small amount of Felix Felicis in a contest started by Professor Horace Slughorn. We say "certainly" because, quite frankly, it's the only thing that it could possibly be (it wouldn't and couldn't be his memory, that scene takes place at Hagrid's cabin. It wouldn't and couldn't be an antidote for Ron, Harry wouldn't be nearly as affable, or in his robes, or holding his potions book.) All that said, notice that the vial isn't the "golden" color characteristic of the potion in the novel. Something perhaps that will be changed digitally later?

We mentioned the potions book, so now's as good as time as any to acknowledge that it's the book first owned by the Half-Blood Prince himself, and given to Harry on the first day of school. Notice it's torn covers, it's worn, beat up look – another clue to the fact that this takes place early in the novel is that Harry hasn't yet had time to replace the binding.

Most interesting, however, isn't what is in the shot, but who, namely, of course, Professor Horace Slughorn. When MTV News spoke with Daniel Radcliffe last year, he mentioned how the once and future head of Slytherin House was simultaneously both very funny and very tragic.
Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) certainly looks very much the former here in this picture, his buffoonish robes, silly graduation cap, and generally ancient look (the tweed jacket, the golden watch fob, etc) contrasting nicely with Harry's own modern appearance. He looks like he wandered in from an Ivy League lecture hall in the 1950s, which of course, in a way, he did.

But what do you think? Does the image from "Half-Blood Prince" please you? Anything you noticed that escaped our eye? What do you make of Slughorn's wardrobe and posture – his look? Join MTV's Slug Club and sound off below.
